Children's Tutoring Initiative

Where children build confidence, discover the joy of reading, and gain the support they need to thrive.

What is Children's Tutoring Initiative (CTI)?

Serving Central Ohio, CTI connects community volunteers with local elementary schools, to support students with provided resources focused on research-based reading skills and weekly consistency.

How a CTI session works

Each week, community volunteers meet with students at school, use prepared literacy materials, and help build reading skills through consistent support.

Your student doesn't need you to have an education background. They need your presence and consistency.

01

Volunteers come in during the regular school day, matched to a school that fits their schedule and location.

02

We'll match you with one or more students at a nearby school. From your very first meeting, you'll begin building a relationship centered on encouragement, support, and shared success.

03

Each student has an individualized folder with books, phonics activities, decoding exercises, and comprehension work matched to where they are in their reading journey. The structure is already there — you follow it. Sessions run approximately 1 hour. Celebrate student success and progress.

04

As the weeks pass, your student will come to recognize a familiar face who shows up for them. Those small moments of consistency can make a lasting difference, for both of you.

05

Students build trust when a volunteer returns week after week. This provides the encouragement and consistent literacy support to grow the students as readers.

Hear From Our Volunteers

"
The best part is seeing the light bulb light up. There have been moments where my student was not confident in their reading, but the moment they realize they are reading and understanding without major help is awesome.

Reading is not just a school subject.

When a child can read with confidence, it changes how they learn, connect, and see what is possible. But that kind of growth takes more than instruction; it takes a consistent adult and access to the resources that make learning possible.

FAQs

No. Community volunteers do not need any teaching experience. CTI provides the curriculum, the materials, and the structure. The relationship is what you bring.
You will be matched with a school based on your location and availability. From there, you will complete a background check and attend an orientation session before your first visit.
Most volunteers are in a classroom within a few weeks of applying. The background check could take the longest to get back as results are mailed to the Charleys Kids office. As you go through the process, we will walk you through every step.
Orientation is a group session where you learn how to use the reading materials, how to log your sessions, and what to expect in your first few visits, so volunteers feel ready.
Placements are based on your school district preference, your availability during school hours, and open spots in partner schools. We match you as close to your neighborhood as possible.
Life happens. Let us know as early as possible so your student's teacher is informed. Consistency matters to students — we will work with you to keep your commitment on track.

A student is waiting for someone like you.

Every week you show up is a week that student get to feel seen, supported, and a little more confident in their reading.
